Most magazines are easy spotted for their iconic title and font on the cover. Vogue has their name displayed in the same serif, big font and food network has their brand on the corner with their simple font in the circle. This is how most viewers can find or recognize their magazine and that is why the font of a masthead is important. It is the statement piece of a magazine brand and the one thing that stays relatively constant through their covers. How a brand displays their logo can determine what a viewer feels and would they want to see more.

I looked at two examples of magazines' mastheads that I liked and analyzed them.

This magazine's masthead is simple but still has an edge and fanciness to it with the serif font. It doesn't take away from the central image and the font is similar to the text. It is cohesive with the rest of the cover and I like its simpleness.

The masthead of this magazine is simple ,bolded, and san serif. It is at the same location in the same font and size in every magazine to keep the viewers familiar with the magazine's brand. The font is cohesive with the rest of the font on the cover and adds to the theme in color. I like the simpleness of the font.

My magazine's name is Art Bowl since it is a catchy and defines the meaning of the magazine - a book full of inspiration and art to choose from like a literal bowl. For my masthead I experimented with a few simple or fancy fonts.

This font is called "Lemon Milk". These san serif fonts are very simple and wouldn't take away from the art being shown on the cover. I like the 2nd one down and the 4th one down the most because of the color it fills in, but it depends on the location of the masthead that determines which boldness looks better. I wouldn't do any fonts italicized because it is barely seen and I don't think it looks good with the bold font.

This font is called "Playfair Display". This serif font gives a fancier and higher class feeling to the art. I like the least bolded one the best because the boldness takes away from the expensive feel. I would not italicize the font because the serif adds enough to the font that too much would not look good.

My top choices would be either the 2nd bolded or most bolded (both not italicized) from the "Lemon Milk" font or the not bolded (not italicized) from the "Playfair Display" font.
