I designed and sent out a survey of questions to collect data and put together the target audience for my magazine. 21 people took my survey and I sent it out through messages and WhatsApp.

The 15 questions that were in the survey are below. They consist of multiple choice, fill in any, and short responses.

I separated the age groups into categories so I would get a better idea of how the results would look based on age.

The ratio of male to female may explain a lot about the results in the survey.

I asked them "What magazines do you enjoy reading? (Vogue, Food Network...)

common answers I got were:

Vogue (x10)

Food Network (x3)

Don't read (x5)

New York Times

Cut

Origami USA

The Rundown

Cosmo

Art and Design

Seventeen

Jeep

There were a lot of magazines listed and Vogue seemed to be a popular one since most of the people the took the survey were female.

Asking this question can explain the results on the age question. Since many of the people that took the survey were between 13-20, it explains why most people see their news on social media.

This question would help me get a better idea of how to format and what to include in my magazine page. I know not to include a lot of text and to include short text and images with an additional interactive element.

The results to this question can support the idea of the magazine to be either for inspiration or for purchase. I know to make the magazine more inspirational.

The results of this question let me know that people would be interested in an Art and Design magazine.

In this question I get an idea of what my audience describes themselves. And since almost 2/3 of the results chose explorer, I know what they would be interested in.

I then asked them "What hobbies do you enjoy in your spare time and the answer I got were:

  1. sports (x2), cycling, volleyball, kayaking, road biking, rowing, tennis, walking

  2. working out (x3)

  3. music (x2)

  4. being with friends (x4)

  5. reading

  6. cooking (x2)

  7. drawing (x2)

  8. watching shows/movies (x2)

  9. dancing (x3)

  10. singing (x3)

  11. doing arts and crafts (x3), origami, painting

  12. TikTok

  13. traveling (x3)

  14. being one with nature

  15. piano

  16. eating

There were a lot of answers revolving being creative and creating something or being active. I know what my audience would do in their own time and take time in their day for art.

In this question I get an idea how many of them create art despite describing their hobbies as something else.

This question is to see how artistic they are despite creating art and participating in these hobbies.

Through this question, I can see how many would get something out of looking at art and feel inspired by it. Majority of the results find they enjoy looking at art.

This question is to get an idea of what type of art to include in my magazine.

This question can help me understand who they would be interested in learning about. Whether I can find someone that they don't know about or someone everyone knows. I know that I should highlight artists they already know since majority chose favorite artists.

The last question I asked them was "How do you feel about art?"

  1. "It's something very important that people can learn a lot about. It also develops the brain in a very important way."

  2. "I think it's an escape from reality"

  3. "it's cool and interesting to see how creative people can be"

  4. "It's interesting and shares a story usually"

  5. "I love it. Everything about it, It speaks what can't be spoken"

  6. "It represents my feelings"

  7. "I love how many different interpretations it has and how open and creative you can be."

  8. "I enjoy it, creating learning and exploring"

  9. "It's great, otherwise the world is boring"

  10. "I think it's an amazing way to express yourself."

Many went into depth about how art touches them, some described the impact it has on them, and some thought it was very "interesting".

Looking through the number of people that like Art and Design magazines, create art, and like looking at it, I found that more people are interested in this topic. Reading how art makes people feel it gives a deeper meaning to art and how it connects to them on a personal level. Overall, I feel people would be interested in my magazine since many love art and being creative or inspired.

The survey overall supports my target audience for people who are involved in art as a hobby and like to be inspired by looking at art. I would consider my target audience to be demographically in big cities where people can be creative and psychographically people who get inspired by art. It would also be people who like creating art and love to understand the story or message it shares as another psychographic. I was surprised that so many people create art, but then I understood that anything can be art, not just paintings and sculptures. The survey helps me understand more about my audience and what they would like to see.
